UNICEF Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Disturbing Status as Global Leader in Out-of-School Children

UNICEF has expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s standing as the country with the highest number of out-of-school children worldwide. According to UNICEF’s latest findings, only 63% of primary school children attend school regularly. Shockingly, this leaves a staggering 10.2 million primary school-age children and an additional 8.1 million at the junior secondary level out of school.

These troubling statistics were highlighted by Dr. Tushar Rane, Chief of Field Office at the Bauchi UNICEF Field Office, during a regional stakeholders’ engagement meeting held in Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa states. UNICEF emphasized the pressing need to address the low learning achievement rates, particularly in the North-East and North-West sub-regions of Nigeria.
