UK Universities Witness 46% Drop in Nigerian Applicants in 2024 as Boycott Grows

According to the latest data from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), the demand for UK education among Nigerian students has significantly declined in 2024. UCAS, the UK higher education monitoring body, revealed a stark drop in undergraduate degree applications from Nigeria, plummeting from over 3,000 to just over 1,500 applications, marking a notable 46% decrease.

This decline in interest is attributed to Nigerian students boycotting UK universities in response to recent government policies aimed at curbing migration numbers. Specifically, the UK Home Office implemented a national policy in January, restricting international students, including Nigerians pursuing master’s and undergraduate degrees, from bringing dependents through the student visa route. Exceptions are made only for postgraduate researchers or government-funded scholarship students.
