Farmers Report Importers Pay $58 for Bag of Rice from India
The President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Kabir Ibrahim, has revealed that imported rice from India costs $58 per bag upon arrival in Nigeria.
In a recent interview with The PUNCH in Lagos, Ibrahim explained that the high exchange rate in Nigeria makes locally produced rice more affordable compared to imported varieties.
According to Ibrahim, the landing cost of a 50kg bag of rice from India is above N60,000 when factoring in the current exchange rate and local distribution costs.
He further emphasized that the cost of importing maize from Brazil is also higher than sourcing it locally, despite Brazil’s proximity and shorter voyage time.
Disputing claims that 70% of imported livestock into Nigeria comes from the Niger Republic, Ibrahim stated that most livestock slaughtered in Lagos originates from the northern part of Nigeria, not Niger.
The AFAN president advocated for the transportation of cattle by rail to ensure their welfare during transit. Additionally, he highlighted the economic benefits of purchasing locally produced agricultural products over imported ones.
Shaki Agbeyewa, the Deputy Chairman of AFAN, Lagos Chapter, echoed Ibrahim’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of supporting local agriculture for economic growth and food security.
