Former Brazil international footballer Dani Alves, who was convicted of rape in Spain in February, has paid his bail of one million euros, allowing him to leave jail while awaiting his appeal, a court confirmed on Monday. One of the world’s most decorated footballers, Dani Alves, aged 40, was sentenced last month to four-and-a-half years in jail for raping a young woman in the VIP bathroom of a Barcelona nightclub on December 31, 2022.

In a surprising turn of events, a Barcelona court granted his request for provisional release last Wednesday, provided that he posted bail of a million euros ($1.08 million), surrendered his Spanish and Brazilian passports, remained within the country, and reported to court weekly during the appeal process.

It took until Monday for Alves to secure the necessary funds, as his entourage worked to raise the required amount. “We hereby inform you that Dani Alves’ bail has been registered in the accounts of the 21st section of the Barcelona Court,” stated the court in an official statement.
