Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey’s absence from Nigeria’s upcoming match against Mali on Tuesday has been confirmed, as he returns to England for further medical evaluation following an injury. Despite being included in the initial 23-player squad for Nigeria’s international break fixtures against Ghana and Mali, Bassey was unable to participate in the recent 2-1 victory over Ghana due to his injury concerns. The Fulham defender, who has become a mainstay for the Super Eagles since joining Fulham last season, is now on his way back to England for assessment. Bassey’s contributions to the Nigerian national team have been significant since his debut in March 2022 under coach Gernot Rohr. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s campaign during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they secured a commendable second-place finish in Ivory Coast.
