Ayra Starr: Admitted to University at 14 Years Old

“Nigerian Singer Ayra Starr Shares Admission to University at Age 14
Ayra Starr discloses obtaining her degree early as a result of her mother’s insistence on graduating before pursuing her music career. In a recent interview with Billboard News, she reveals her aspiration to become a teenage pop star.”

Starr recalled, “I entered the university at 14. It feels like my mom has been using music to steer me since childhood. She insisted, ‘If you want to pursue music, you must fulfill certain requirements.’ Initially hesitant about relocating from Benin Republic to Lagos, my mother convinced me of Lagos’s musical opportunities.

She emphasized that music could only come after completing my education. Typically, in Nigeria, secondary school is completed by age 15 or 16. Knowing that waiting until 15 would hinder my dream of becoming a teenage pop star, I decided to take action. I took the equivalent of SAT in Nigeria, known as JAMB.

While my results weren’t exceptional enough for Ivy League schools, they satisfied my mom and got me into a reputable institution.”
“After completing a three-year course in International Relations, I delved into music by posting covers online. Remarkably, the same year I graduated, I secured a record deal with Mavin Records.”
